Below are some of the professional development opportunities that I have presented with other English as an Additional Language (EAL) teachers. Most of these presentations have focused on language acquisition or sheltered instruction though there has also been a recent shift toward presentations centering around independent reading or educational technology.
Fall 2021 Staff Workshop:
Leveraging Canva to Enhance Teaching
Staff workshop created as a school response to Cognita's November 2021 CogCon keynote presentation about "Enhancing the Learning Environment with Technology". This 55-minute school response asked participants to partake in a "Quickfire Challenge", inspired by the Michigan State University Educational Technology program, where they had 25 minutes to create and share a one slide game created on Canva and then uploaded to Google Jamboard where students had to interact to complete the game. In the end, 30 participants were able to upload either a finished or mostly finished game to a staff compilation folder of Google Jamboard games.

Fall 2021 Staff Workshop:
Introducing SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol)
Staff workshop created and led by the language support department. This introductory workshop pre-assessed faculty on their knowledge of sheltered instruction and the components that make up the SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) framework. The goal was for 100% of faculty to be trained on how to implement sheltered instruction in classrooms over the course of 2-3 years.

Fall 2021 Staff Orientation:
Rolling out Sun Bear Reads (SBR)
Introduction to new whole school sustained silent reading program called "Sun Bear Reads" where all students and faculty read for enjoyment from 10:00 - 10:20 AM each day. This presentation was given during beginning of year whole-staff orientation and delivered entirely online due to government restrictions in Vietnam for all schools to operate from home during lockdown. This presentation was especially enjoyable for myself as I was able to prompt staff to think about their own reading identities in a way that is similar to how I ask students to think about themselves as readers during English Language Arts classes.

Parent presentation discussing and modeling shared reading experiences between parent and child using a variety of literature. Most of the interactions, modeled by our very own students and assistant teachers, was conducted in Korean to make the experience relatable for all parents attending.
Below are some materials shared with parents to spark conversation about books at home. |
